Despite MBTA’s absence, third meeting in Beverly proceeds
This week, the MBTA pulled out of their third public meeting in a row to discuss the summer shutdown of their Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line. The line, which is operated by notoriously underperforming private contractor Keolis, is due for safety upgrades for which an entire shutdown during the summer is necessary. During these meetings, residents expected to hear how the MBTA planned to accommodate residents as well as visitors who bring revenue during the summer months. Despite the MBTA’s absence, the third meeting in Beverly proceeded. The lack of communication from the MBTA or Keolis about the shutdown has residents and officials alike growing antsy with the commuter rail service in general, especially considering the track record of service since privatization.
