MBTA New Ticket App Service Failure During Morning Commute

Last week State House News Service reported that the MBTA’s new ticket app, from developer Masabi, went down during Monday’s morning commute, resulting in free rides for many T passengers. According to Joe Pesaturo, the service issues affected riders on a national scale, including riders of New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Long Island Railroad as well as Southern California’s Metrolink system.

Authorities are unsure how much revenue was lost by the T due to the malfunction. It is stories like this that remind us that MBTA officials should remain cognizant of the risk inherent to any outsourcing contract.
